CAPITAL SUGGESTIONS

Head Concierge Rob Shorter shares his top tips on how to make the most out of London this summer.

When the sun’s shining there is no better place to be than London. Whether it’s a sightseeing trip, al fresco dining or simply a stroll in the park (you might have noticed we have a rather large one next door!), the capital is a great place to be at this time of year.

And with the sun showing no sign of heading off on holiday why not get involved in Love Parks Week (24 July – 1 August), a special seven-day event spanning the capital. Great for anyone with kids, head down to Holland Park (more of which, later) for a chance to build a woodland shelter, go ‘minibeast hunting’, search for dragonflies and make a mask. For those wanting something a little more grown-up, check out Hampstead Heath for live music from East London Brass or a fish tasting session.

Another way to make the most of the fantastic weather is to go to one of the capital’s many outdoor shows. In the heart of one of the city’s favourite parks, Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre is a much-loved tradition of London life with everything from Shakespeare to stand-up comedy on offer across the summer. Even closer to the Royal Garden Hotel is Holland Park, which, once again, will be hosting a season of opera that runs until the middle of August. A spectacular location, boasting beautiful flora and some wonderful sculptures, the park is a terrific place to enjoy a night of culture and an underrated gem.

If, heaven forbid, the weather takes a turn for the worse you’ll be pleased to know that there are some fantastic (indoor) shows currently running in the capital. War Horse, a thrilling and spectacular production based on the celebrated novel by Michael Morpurgo, has being wowing the crowds at the Drury Lane theatre for several months now, whilst Jersey Boys the story of Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons – is guaranteed to get you on your feet. With tickets to both shows hard to come by, let us help you find the best seats still available.

For those of you wanting to explore more of London, the Big Bus Company offers a 24hr ticket that allows you see to the very best of the city and hop on and off at your convenience or, if the heat of the city is getting all to much, why not jump on a boat at Westminster and head for a leisurely lunch or spot of shopping at Richmond or Windsor? With our assistance, these trips are easy to plan and are a great option for couples and families alike.

ROB’S RECOMMENDATION

My guaranteed great day out

Science Museum, South Kensington
A short walk or bus ride from the Royal Garden Hotel, the Science Museum is the perfect destination for those with children and anyone with an interest in the way the world works. A number of hands-on activities are sure to keep everyone entertained, whilst a newly opened gallery that will change every couple of weeks explores science in the media and the most important scientific issues affecting us today. Entry to the museum is free, but be sure to get there early if you want to avoid lengthy queues.
